White Film on Glassware From a Viking Dishwasher: Scale or Etching?

A chalky white film on glasses is almost always mineral scale rather than a failed dishwasher, and the difference between scale and permanent etching decides whether anything can be recovered. What to check, in what order, and which three parts scale reaches first.

Cloudy glasses coming out of a Viking dishwasher get blamed on the machine, then on the detergent, then on the water, roughly in that order. Two of those three are usually involved, and the machine is often the least of it — but a dishwasher that has been running in scaled-up condition for a couple of years does eventually develop faults of its own, which is why the two problems tend to arrive together.

Start by working out what the film actually is. It decides everything after it.

What the film actually is

Two completely different things look almost identical on a wine glass.

Mineral scale is a deposit sitting on top of the glass: calcium and magnesium carbonates left behind when hard water evaporates instead of sheeting off. It is additive, it builds up over months, and it comes off.

Etching is the glass itself corroded — minerals leached out of the surface by water that is too soft, detergent that is too aggressive, or wash temperatures that are too high for delicate glass. It is subtractive, it is permanent, and no product on a shelf reverses it.

The test takes a minute. Put one cloudy glass in a bowl of white vinegar for about five minutes, then rinse and dry it.

  • Clear again: mineral scale. Recoverable, and the cause is fixable.
  • Still cloudy, sometimes with a faint rainbow sheen when tilted: etching. The glass will not come back, but you can stop it happening to the rest.

Where Denver water fits in

Hardness across the metro is not one number. It varies by source, by season and by which side of town you are on, and a house on a well is a different situation again. So it is worth knowing your own figure rather than assuming — your water provider publishes it, and a cheap test strip will get you close enough to act.

The relevant part is what the mineral does inside the machine. Every fill leaves a little behind. In a low-humidity climate the water that clings to a glass at the end of a cycle evaporates fast and completely, which is exactly the condition under which dissolved minerals plate out as a visible film instead of running off with the water.

That is why two houses with the same water can get different results: the one whose rinse aid ran dry six months ago sees the film first.

The three parts scale reaches first

Scale does not distribute itself evenly. It collects where water is hottest and where it moves fastest.

The heater. A scaled heating element transfers heat poorly, so the machine either runs long trying to reach temperature or gives up below it. Wash chemistry is temperature-dependent — detergent that is designed to work at temperature does very little below it, and undissolved detergent contributes its own haze.

The spray arm holes. Partially blocked holes drop the pressure and skew the pattern. Glasses on the upper rack stop being properly rinsed, which means more mineral-laden water is left standing on them at the end. Hold an arm up to a light and look through the holes; then spin each one by hand to check it turns freely.

The rinse aid dispenser. The cap seal hardens, the metering port blocks, and the machine keeps reporting that it is dosing when it is not. This is the single most common cause of a film that appeared “suddenly”.

What you can do in an afternoon

In this order, because each step changes what the next one tells you.

  1. Fill the rinse aid and set the dosage up one notch from the middle. Run two normal cycles before judging anything.
  2. Run the hot tap at the sink nearest the dishwasher until it runs hot, then start the cycle. A machine that begins with a tank of cold water spends the first part of the wash getting up to temperature and the detergent does very little in the meantime.
  3. Clear the spray arms with a pin and a rinse. Check the filter and the sump while you are down there for glass grit and label paper.
  4. Descale with a purpose-made dishwasher descaler on an empty hot cycle. Do not improvise with quantities of household acid — it attacks seals, and a leaking door seal is a worse problem than a hazy glass.
  5. Correct the detergent dose to what the manufacturer states, and stop adding extra as compensation.

If the film is gone after that, it was scale and housekeeping, and the machine never had a fault at all.

When it needs a technician

Call when the film survives all of the above, or when it arrives with company:

  • glassware still hazy after descaling and two cycles with fresh rinse aid
  • a cycle that stretches for hours, which usually means the machine is waiting on a temperature it cannot reach, or a thermistor is reading low
  • water that is barely warm at the end of a cycle
  • a rinse aid reservoir that empties with no change in results, which points at the metering port rather than the reservoir
  • any damp under the toe kick, which is a fitting or a pump gasket and does not improve on its own

The diagnosis on this one is mostly measurement: actual water temperature through the cycle, fill volume, spray pressure, thermistor resistance against its curve, and heater resistance to see whether scale has already cost it. That tells you whether a part is genuinely finished or whether the machine simply needs descaling and the habits around it changed.

Will more detergent clear the film?

Usually the opposite. Overdosing leaves detergent residue of its own and, on soft water, contributes to etching. Fix the water temperature, the rinse aid and the scale on the heater first, and use the dose the detergent maker specifies.

Is a rinse aid really necessary?

On a machine that relies on residual heat to dry, yes. Rinse aid breaks the surface tension so water sheets off the glass instead of standing in droplets. Droplets are what dry into visible spots and, over time, into a film.

Can etched glass be restored?

No. Etching is glass that has been chemically dissolved at the surface, and nothing puts it back. That is why the scale-or-etching test matters before you buy anything: one is reversible and one is not.
